This exhibition presents the complex work of Black artists who, at a time of dizzying political, social, and aesthetic revolution are producing some of the most innovative and socially forward work in St. Louis today.
The works of art in 31 Days; Reclaiming Our Time Exhibition, are a part of each artist's contemporary and ongoing work. The current aesthetic revolution happening in the art world today is so broad and complex. The innovation and audacious liberties taken in art creation are what we, at Ellipsis Studio STL live for. You will see some of these proclivities shown in this exhibition. Our line-up of artists are doing the work that our gallery's mission is focused on. Community building, bridging gaps, anti-racism, LGBTQ rights, intersection of isolated collectives, promoting quality artwork and building trusting artist relationships.
No single subject or single style exemplifies the art made for this exhibtion, however it all comes from the St. Louis metro area footprint and has been created during a chaotic political timeframe, as well as tumultuous St. Louis decade. All the while, these artists are working for a greater purpose and focusing on pushing themselves to greater heights and focusing on their "whys." While all the artists represented here are innovators, they work in various media, draw inspiration from disparate sources, and take different stances toward current events. The exhibition embraces a wide diversity of work.
Driven by a range of motivations and using a variety of approaches, the artists in this exhibit are giving compelling visual form to a transformative mvoement in American history. While the art is not political in nature, we are surrounded by political stryfe and the hands of politics are constantly wrapping themselves around the necks of those who are always doing the work to reverse systemic racism. Because of this, we believe it is important to extend this show to 31 days, giving Black History Month its due full month, although we will continue to celebrate Black artists everyday of the year. Representing marginalized artists is one of our main focuses and we will continue to work towards intersectional representation in our gallery.
